Vision Statement-Adopt an Overpass Program
Pittsburgh Overpass Project will build a coalition of pro-democracy 2.0 teams through the Adopt-an-Overpass program.
As more forward-thinking messages begin dominating our overpasses, a “Pittsburgh’s Best”model of our new democracy will emerge.
History-Mission
Our first banner making party was held at the Woods Run Branch of the Carnegie Library on Tuesday, June 3, 2025. The first slogan the group decided on was "DANGER AHEAD, NO KINGS". 8 people attended the first banner making. All the work for the banner was completed in approximately 2.5 hours. We traced all of the 20" letters onto a 12 mil. orange tarp, cut out each letter and punched holes in the letters to attach to the deer fencing. We then took the final assembly out into the yard of library. There we laid the letters out for alignment, and used wire ties to fasten the letters to the fencing. We used wooden slats at the ends to hold the deer fencing. The banner can then be attached to extendable poles for maximum visibility
Our first deployment was on the 16th Street Bridge over the Arts festival. It was storming but that didn't hold us back. We were excited to show off our new creation and it was overwhelming well received. Conversations began happening, relationships formed and with the help of many from Indivisible and 50501 an "Overpass Extravaganza" group was formed. Many people started showing up for banner makings and overpass actions. The face to fact interactions were inspiring, so many different individuals coming together around this. One day a young lady came to the Chestnut street overpass and told us she was having a bad day, saw us and it gave her hope. She is a strong part of the team that has formed around this.
Just as all these small relationships have formed we hope that through the Adopt-an-Overpass program that we can help build a coalition of teams that adopt a bridge to inspire, motivate and stay strong as we resist the current fascist regime and encourage one another as we develop a "Pittsburgh's Best" vision for a new democracy that is so much better than we have ever known, Democracy 2.0.
